MONTHLY REPORT: NOVEMBER 2014
WINTER BROCHURE: was finalized and typeset in-house. The brochure was an
insert in the November 20 edition of the Suffolk Times. The brochure was delivered to
town hall, local libraries, supermarkets, delis, businesses, and the Human Resource
Center in Mattituck. It was also posted on the townÂ’s website.
SPRING 2015 RECREATION BROCHURE: We are already planning activities and
programs for the upcoming spring brochure. The brochure will be an insert in the
Thursday, March 5 edition of The Suffolk Times.
DEPARTMENT HEAD MEETING: took place at town hall on Wednesday,
November 12. Topics covered included: Highlights of New CSEA Collection Bargaining
Agreement; New Employee Performance Appraisal Process- Department Head
Responsibilities; NYSHIP Enrollment Assistance; and Website Updates from Department
Heads.
PICKLEBALL COURTS?: It appears that pickleball fever has hit Southold, and we in
the Recreation Department are exploring ways to bring pickleball to our community. We
received the first tentative inquiries in 2013, but over this past summer, the trickle turned
into a flood of requests. Since August of this year, we have probably collected more than
40 names of Southold residents interested in a pickleball program.
So, in order to offer a program here, we would need to offer a court, and we were
thinking that possibly one of the tennis courts (probably the furthest western court at
Cochran Park) could have pickleball lines added to it. This would be a relatively
inexpensive way to develop a program and determine if there is enough interest to
explore other options and further develop the program.
We recognize that our courts get quite a bit of use by the general public, for the town-
sponsored tennis lessons, and the Southold High School matches. However, the fast
growing interest in establishing a pickleball program here should be explored and
seriously considered if we are to truly serve the public.
