A special meeting of the Southold Town Trustees was called
to order at 7 o'clock P.M. on Menddy, December 3rd, 1956
at the Supervisor 's Office , Greenport, N.Y. This meeting
was called :Bx at the request of the Local Baymen who
petitioned the Town Trustees to take wha ever`steps are
necessary to secure permission from the New York State
Conservation Department to allow the taking of escallops
of any size in those areas in Town waters where these
escallops are in danger of being destroyed by natural causes
during the winter. It was determined that the following
areas are to be considered such disaster areas:
Gidds Bay - Orient
Goose Creek - Southold
Laughing Waters - Southold
The permit was requested for the period from the present
date to April 1, 1957, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. The
limit - shall be 5 bushels per person per day.
The Town Trustees respectfully request the Town Board to
use their best efforts to secure such permission from the
Conservation Department.
It is further recommended that the Conservation Department
be requested to investigate those areas in the bays where
it is reported that large aaaxxx quantities of escallops
are endangered and that such areas be considered disaster
areas and permission be granted for the taking of bug
escallops in such, areas.
