CoNsuLTiNo Elaine.Huanci@) lum.mit.edu February 0 2013 To: SolarCity 3055 Clearview Way San Mateo,CA 94402 Subject: Structural Certification for Installation of Solar Panels Robertson Residence 1660 Indian Neck Lane Peconic, NY 11958 To whom it may concern. A design check for the subject residence was done on the existing roofing and framing systems for the installation of solar panels over the roof. From a field inspection of the property, the existing roof support structures were observed as follows: MP1 The roof consists of asphalt shingle on plywood sheathing that is supported by nominal 2"x10" rafters at 16"oc, paired with 2"x10"ceiling joists. The rafters have a horizontal span of approximately 16'-7"with a slope of 28 degrees. The rafters are connected to a continuous 2"x12" header board at the pitch, and load bearing walls on either side. There are 2"x4"vertical struts at 48"oc to support the ridge of the roof. M P2 The roof consists of asphalt shingle on plywood sheathing that is supported by nominal 2"x12" rafters at 16" oc, paired with 2"x6" raised ceiling joists. The rafters have a horizontal span of approximately 13'- 11"with a slope of 25 degrees. The rafters are connected to a continuous 4"x16" header board at the pitch, and load bearing walls on either side. The existing roof MP1 framing systems are judged to be inadequate to withstand the loadings imposed by the installation of solar panels. .It is recommended to add 2"x6"collar ties between every pair of rafters at 16"oc. The length of the collar ties shall be approximately 10'with at least three Simpson SDW 22300 screws on each side for connections. The spacing of the solar standoffs should be kept at 48" oc with a staggered pattern to ensure proper distribution of loads. The existing roof MP2 framing systems are judged to be adequate to.withstand the loadings imposed by the installation of the solar panels. No reinforcement is necessary. The spacing of the solar standoffs should be kept at 48" oc with a staggered pattern to ensure proper distribution of loads. I further certify that all applicable loads required by New York Residential Code were applied to the SolarCity solar rail system and analyzed. The applicable loads and maximum load summations are indicated in the load combination, which is part of this submittal package. Furthermore, the installation crews have been thoroughly trained to install the solar panels based on the specific roof installation 1 EAH Consulting 290 Pleasant Street Unit 117 E Watertown, MA 02472 Phone: 1.978.406.8921 EAH CONSULTING Elaine.Huang0alum.mit.edu instructions developed by SolarCity for the racking system and for the roof connections.
