Southold Town Planning Board
March 31 1959
A special joint meeting of the Southold Town Board and
Southold Town Planning Board was held at the Supervisor's
Office, Greenport, on March 3, 1959 at 7:40 P.M.
Town Board members present: Supervisor Norman Klipp,
Justice E. Perry Edwards, Justice Ralph Tuthill, Councilman
Lester Albertson, and Town Attorney Robert Tasker.
Planning Board members present: Chairman John Wickham,
Harold Reeve, Henry Moisa, Alfred Grebe, and Archibald Young.
Also present: Otto Van Tuyl, Consultant, and Howard M.
Terry, Building Inspector.
Supervisor Klipp explained the purpose of the meeting
and asked for opinions on what should be done with single
trailers. There was a long discussion on this subject, many
ideas being expressed. The most prevalent thought was there
should be an area set aside for single trailers in the Zoning
Ordinance, or the establishment of a Town-wide trailer park.
Single trailers on a temporary basis seemed to raise no par-
ticular problem and should be continued on a special permit
from the Town Board. Suggestion was made as to where there
is an application for a single trailer the applicant be re-
quired to notify all adjoining property owners and get their
consent. This idea was not approved as per advice of the
Southold Town Planning Board -2- March 3, 1959
Town Counsel. Operation of existingtrailer and tourist camps
was discussed with particular reference to maintaining same in
conformance with requirements of present Tourist Camp Ordin-
ance. It was decided not to amend the ordinance at 'this time.
The matter of lobstering on Fishers Islam. was brought up
for discussion to decide whether an amendment should be made
to the Zoning Ordinance permitting lobstering as fish farming
as one sort or another. After considerable discussion it was
decided to leave non-conforming uses as. is and any new appli-
cants should apply to the Board of Appeals for a variance
before any operation of this nature is started and thereby
have a control over such operations.
The matter of an amendment to our Rubbish Burning Ordin-
ance was brought up, which has to do with the clearing of
building lots and disposal of brush, unwanted wood, disposal
of stumps, etc. Suggestion was made that we require removal
of stumps and burning of brush, etc. , before a building permit
is issued, Also not permit burying of stumps and rubbish in
the lot. After some discussion it was decided this matter
should be brought up by fire departments and enforced by them
if they wished such an amendment to the Ordinance.
The matter cf building docks in Town waters was brought
up for discussion with particular reference to the inland waters
of Fishers Island. The Supervisor read the Andros Patent which
outlined the territory over which the Town Trustees have juris-
diction and it was decided Fishers Island was not included
within that area and they should apply to the Federal Government
for permits for docks in that area.
No definite conclusion was reached on regard to single
trailers, it being left strictly to the Town Board to make a
decision on this matter.
The next Planning Board meeting is to be held March 179
1959 at the Town Clerk's Office, Main Road, Southold at 7:30 P.M.
Meeting adjourned at 10:45 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
John Wickham, Chairman
Southold Town PlanningBoard
