BOARD OF TOWN TRUSTEES
TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
Town Hall, 53095 Main Road
P.O. Box 728
Southold, New York 11971
MARCH 27, 1986
WORK SESSION - 7:00 P.M.
PRESENT WERE: President Henry P. Smith
Trustee John Bredemeyer
Trustee Ellen M. Larsen
Trustee Philip J. Goubeaud
Trustee Albert Krupski
Bay Constable Don Dzenkowski
Charles deQuillfeldt
Clerk Ilene Pfifferling
The Trustees discussed the sampling of Arshamomaque Pond to evaluate the
conditional area, possible development of a seasonal program for the pond,
diversion of storm water from the pond and an evaluation of Mattituck Creek
for seasonal certification.
Mr. deQuillfeldt advised that Mr.. Redman indicated that storm water runoff is a
major contributor of coliform bacteria to Arshamomaque Pond and identified
several problem areas. The Trustees indicated a willingness to look at areas
on town property, such as the ditch by Grove Road. The Trustees asked that
Mr. deQuillfeldt contact Suffolk County DPW on the culvert by Shiloh Church.
The Trustees agreed that someone should accompany Mr. deQuillfeldt on an
inspection of the above sites.
Mr. deQuillfeldt summarized this seasons conditional .program for the pond.
Arshamomaque was "open" 57 days of 134 (43%) as of March 27 ' (61 of 138 or
44%, March 31.) Five sampling dates, three after substantial rains, showed low
coliform levels which may indicate the possibility of running a seasonal program
for the pond. He stated that many more samples after rain events were necessary.
The Trustees offered assistance in sampling.
The Trustees expressed an interest in reevaluating Mattituck Creek. Mr. deQuillfeldt
advised that there was a possibility for a conditional program for the northern
portion of the creek, but that the large number of boats may be a problem.
The Trustees offered help with sampling in that area also.
Other items brought up were the seasonal certifications ,of Gull Pond and
Goldsmith Inlet. Mr. deQuillfeldt advised that Gull Pond was meeting the D.E.C.
criteria but Goldsmith looked bad. The Trustees requested that the D.E.C.
continue as "Permit Advocates" on certain projects.
