with' red light and siren, -

WHEREAS, the National -Safety Council is conducting- a campaign to reduce
the. annual -Christmas season accident. toll which .last .year re,aghed a
total of 800 lives -lost and 2.8, 00.0 injuries during the month of. December
in. the United States,, and.
WHEREAS, the National Conference for Religious. Leaders.,has asked that
all religious and civic leaders.-to cooperate in an all-out campaign
to .pr-event tragedy on the highways and in the homes of our country,-, and
WHEREAS, the Town of Southold will conduct ..a .Christmas campaign which
will demonstrate that man is literally his brother' s keeper;
THEREFORE, as Supervisor _of. this Town, I do hereby, on behalf of the
citizenry of. the .:Town.'_of .Southold, . declare enthusiastic. participation
in.-the. 1965 Christmas Holiday Safety Campaign and wish to call. upon
the people-:of our town tn- observe the. period of December 1. to January 2
and to join in the effort to reduce accidents during this year' s ,
Christmas-New Year. holidays.. I.-therefore urge every-.citizen to .be :
especially thoughtful of the rights of his.ne.ighbor, and on the streets
and highway to drive by the golden rule, to 'set a good example for other
drivers, to .observe .all traffic laws, and not.-to drive after drinking
.during the holiday season. .In :addition, we,must, eliminate hazards in the
home during the campaign,- and ,at..all times.
