SOUTHOLD TOWN BOARD OF APPEALS
July 26, 1962
A regular meetingof the Southold Town Board of -,Appeals
was held 7: 30' P.M. , Thursday, July 26, 1962 at the Town Office,
Main Road,, Southold, New York.
There were present: Messrs. Robert W.- Gillispie, Jr. ,
Chairman, Robert Bergen, Herbert Rosenberg and .Charles Grigonis,
Jr.
Absent: Mr. Serge Doyen, Jr.
PUBLIC HEARING: Appeal No. 490 - 7: 30 P.M. (E.D.S.T. ) ,
upon application of Rodman Pell, 215 Atlantic Avenue, Greenport,
New York, a/c Greenport -Methodist- Church, for a special exception
in accordance with the Zoning Ordinance, Article IV, Section 408,
for permission to erect and maintain a directional sign on the
property of 'Nassau Brick -Co. , Inc. , south side Route 25, West
Greenport, New York, approximately 1300 ft. west of Silvermere
Roa d. Fee paid $5. 00.
The Chairman opened the hearing by reading application for
a special exception, legal notice of hearing, affidavit attesting

to its publication in the official newspaper, notification,
to the applicant and letter of permission from the property
owner, Nassau Brick Co. , Inc.
THE' CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak
for this application?
'MR. LEANDER' CHUTE, Greenport, New York: I do. I would
like to have it granted. It is to be the uniform type of church
sign, similar to a Rotary sign.
THE' CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak
against this application?. ,
(There was no response. )
The Board finds that the applicant is in need .6f an
identification sign giving the location of the Greenport
Methodist- Church.
The Public convenience and welfare. and justice will be
served and the legally established or permitted use of neighborhood
property and adjoining use districts will not be permanently or
substantially injured and the spirit of the Ordinance will be
, observed,. therefore
On motion of Mr. Gillispie, seconded by,Mr. Grigonis, it
was
RESOLVED that the Greenport Methodist' Church be granted
permission to erect and maintain a directional sign on the
property of 'Nassau Brick Company, Inc. , Bath side Route 25,
West Greenport, New York, approximately 1300 feet west of
Silvermere Road. This sign is to be located no closer than
5 ' ft. to any property line, and no higher- than .15 ft. 6 in.
from the ground level.

Rosenberg, and Mr. Grigonis.

PUBLIC HEARING: Appeal No. 491 - 7: 45.' P.M. '(E.D.S.T. ) ,
upon application of Margaret K. Henriksen, . Main Street, Orient,
New York, for a special exception iz accordance with the Zoning
Ordinance, Article III,. Section 300, . Subsection 11, for permission
to erect and maintain. a directional sign on the property of' Floyd
F. King, Jr. , north side Route 25, East Greenport, west of property
of' W. P. Bingle. Fee paid $5. 00.
The Chairman opened the hearing by reading application for
a special exception, legal notice of hearing, affidavit attesting
to its publication in the- official newspaper and letter of permission
from the property owner.
THE' CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present whovishes to speak
for this application?
MRS. MARGARET K. HENRIKSEN; ,Main Street, Orient, New York:
The sign is to be located directly -east .of the driveway going
into the' barn at the Floyd King farm. I have eliminated "Rooms
and meals" from this sign as I did the other two and the wording
will be exactly as the other two.
THE 'CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak
against . this application?

THE'.CHAIRMAN: How many signs do you present%have directing
people to 'the Bay House?
MRS. HENRIKSEN: I now have two and this will be the third.
one is on the Edwin King- property near' the labor camp in Greenport
and the other is on the Droskoski property near Brown's Hill's Road.
After investigation and inspection the Board finds that
this applicant is in need of a directional sign to direct people
to the Bay House which is located approximately 3/4 of a mile
from the Main Road on Orient Harbor.
On motion of Mr. Gillispie, seconded by Mr. Bergen, it was
RESOLVED that Margaret-K. Henriksen be granted permission
to erect an3d maintain a directional sign on the property of
Floyd F. King, north side Route '25 East Greenport, west of property

of W. P. Bingle. This sign is to be 4 ft. by 6 ft. , no closer
than 5 ft. from any property line, at least 4 ft. above the ground
level and not higher than 15 ft. 6 in. Wording on the sign to be:
"Directly on the Water, The Bay House and Cottages, Efficiency
Apartments, 4 Miles - Monument. - Turn Right. "
This sign permit should be issued for one year.
Vote of the Board: Ayes:- Mr. Gillispie, Mr. Bergen, Mr.
Rosenberg, and Mr. Grigonis.
The Board of Appeals received a letter from Lefferts P.
Edson, _ Attorney, . Southold stating that Alexander and Frederick
Koke have decided to withdraw Appeal No. 484 for a variance.
On motion of Mr. Gillispie, seconded by Mr. Rosenberg,
it was
RESOLVED that Appeal No. 484, application of Alexander
and Frederick Koke be withdrawn at the request of the applicants.
Vote of the Board: Ayes: - Mr. Gillispie, Mr. Bergen, Mr.
Rosenberg, and Mr. Grigonis.
PUBLIC HEARING: ' Appeal No. 492 - 8: 00 P.M. (E.D.S.T. ) ,
upon application of' Stephen Morell, Montauk Avenue, Fishers
Island, New York, for a special exception in accordance with
the Zoning Ordinance,. Article IV, Section 408, for permission
to erect and maintain a sign on the east side wall of The
Pequot Inn, south side Montauk Avenue, Fishers Island, New York.
Fee paid $5. 00.
The Chairman opened the hearing by reading application
for a spe cial exception, legal notice of hearing, affidavit
attesting to its publication in the, official newspaper and
notification to the applicant.

for this application?

THE CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak
against this application?,

(The Board was advised that the applicant present has this
sign erected on the front of the building and would like to move
it to the side where the entrance is. )
After investigation and inspection the Board finds that
this special exception to remove a sign from one wall to another
is ' requested because the normal allowable location red -ces the
visibility of the sign which was erected about July 15, 1962 to
an extent that the sign serves no purpose.
This wall sign is considerably smaller than the normal
permitted .size and the removal requested would be in harmony
with the general purpose and intent of the zoning ordinance
and complies with the. standaras set forth in the Ordinance.
On motion of Mr. Gillispie, seconded by Mr. Bergen, it
was
RESOLVED that Stephen Morell, . Montauk"Avenue, - Fishers
Island, New York be granted permission to move existing front
wall sign to side wall. on the Pequot Inn, south side Montauk-
Avenue, . Fishers Island,- New York. The size of this sign is
16 ft. by 3 ft.
Vote of the Board: , Ayes:- Mr. Gillispie, . Mr. Bergen, Mr.
RosenBerg, .. and Mr. Grigonis.
PUBLIC HEARING: Appeal No. 487 - This hearing was
scheduled for 8: 15' P.M. , July 19, 1962 but recessed to this
date whenno one appeared to speak for the application.
Upon application of Karl and Peter_ Sledjeski, . Main Road,
Orient, New York, for a special exception in accordance with
Southold Town Board of Appeals -6- July 26, 1962
the Zoning Ordinance, Article X, Section 1003a, for permission
to enlarge existing, labor camp facilities. Location of property:
south side Route 25, Orient, New York, bounded north by Main
Road, east by J. B. Droskosk i, south by J. Tuthill, & J. Dyer,
and west by J. Tuthill and J. Dyer. Fee paid $5. 00.
The Chairman reread the legal notice and application for
a special exception.
THE CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak
for this application?
KARL SLEDJESKI, Orient, New York: I have complied with
the Board of Health regulations and I am ::':doing what they
specify. It was inspected today and it fully passed the
inspection. We have had workers living in that building for
about ten years. I have had up to five, right .now I have
eight. Iwill not have over eight.
THE CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak
against this application?
(There was no response. )
After investigation and inspection the Board finds that
the application is occasioned by anexpansion of the applicants
present labor camp. Due to the discontinuance of the Greenport
Eastern Suffolk Cooperative Labor Camp the farmers must house
additional temporary help.
This camp has been in continuous existence for over ten
years. This camp is being remodeled to conform to the strict
regulations of the County Health Department.
This is open farm country and the use of so-called migrant
labor is an accepted practice and in the past has not been
objectionable.
This type of farm labor is essential for the conduct of
these farms and all camps are under rigid supervision of the
County Health authorities as well as inspection by State Police
at regular intervals.

The Board finds that inasmuch as this type of labor camp
on the farms of active owners is definitely a requirement for the
operation of the local farms a permit valid until December 31,
1962 should be issued. The applicant wishes to enlarge the
capacity of the camp to eight workers. The limited time will
give:, all concerned an opportunity to observe the conduct and
result of these camps. All of the requirements and standards
set forth in the Ordinance have been met.
On motion of Mr. Gillispie, seconded by Mr. Grigonis, it
was
RESOLVED that Karl and Peter Sledjeski be granted permission
to enlarge their existing labor camp facilities. The permit
should be issued until December' 31, 1962 for the housing of eight
workers.
This limited time will give all concerned an opportunity to
observe the conduct and result of these camps.
Vote of the Board: Ayes:- Mr. Gillispie, Mr. Bergen, Mr.
Rosenberg, and Mr. Grigonis.
On motion of' Mr. Gillispie, seconded by Mr. Rosenberg it was
RESOLVED that the minutes of July 19, 1962 be approved as
submitted.
Vote of the Board: Ayes:- Mr® Gillispie, Mr. Bergen, Mr.
Rosenberg, and Mr. Grigonis.
The next meeting of the Southold Town Board of Appeals will
be held 7: 30 P.M. , Thursday, August 1, 1962, Town Office, Main
Roadt Southold, New York.
