SOUTHOLD DARING
July 25, 1956
The Public Hearing on the proposed Southold 'Town Zoning Ordinance
was called to order by the VicepChairman, Robert W. Gillispie, Jr. ,
at 8 P .M. in the Southold High School with the reading of the pub-
lished Notice of Hearing as printed in the L. I. Trageler of July 12,
1956.
About 165 persons attended the hearing.
Mr. Gillispie introduced the members of the Zoning Commission
as well as Mr. Muddeman, Plus . "ickham and Mr. Van Tuyl, and he men-
tioned that expenses to date totaled. 4�V760.38. tie then issued in-
structions to those attending asking them to give their names and ad-
dresses before speaking and asking for written statements to back up
their testimony.
Those speaking were :
Alfred Teves,Southold, asking the procedure which would be fol-
lowed in the conduct of future hearings.
Mrs. Vincent Cassidy, Southold, asked if there would be a referen-
dum.
Elliott Meyer, Southold, spoke on a referendum.
Leander Glover, Cutchogue, stated that he knew of Babylon people
who were against zoning in their town and he felt they had some good
points.
Edwin Prellwitz, Peconic, replied to Mr. Glover and suggested he
thought zoning long overdue in Southold town. He complimented the Com-
mission on its work.
Mrs . Del Barian, Southold , did not feel enough publicity was given
to the notice of the hearings.
Albert Orlowskili Cutchogue , wanted the names of the 3 newspapers
in which the notice of the hearing was published.
Alfred. Teves, Southold, criticized not spending onough money . He
felt not enough experts were hired for the job.
Frederic Rich, Southold, thanked. the Commission for its work.
Mrs .Frances Adams, Peconic, wanted. a rising vote of thanks to the Com
mission.
Ten-minute recess .
On re-convening, the Chairman spoke at some length on the subject
of lots held in single and separate ownership.
Mr. 1dack, vouthold, had a question concerning ownerstlip of lots
of less than 1001 .
Ir7rs . James Tait, Southold, wanted the Commission to spend more
money on publicizing the Town Board's hearing in august. Mr. "ickham
stated he would recommend strongly to the Town Board that they send
out cards to all taxpayers on this.
Mrs . Williara Bollman, Cutchogue, also spoke re more publicity.
IYLr. Arthur DeMott, East Niiarion, spoke as a member of the Board of
Appeals from Rockville Center for the ordinance.
Mr. Henry Lytle , Southold, spoke for the Southold-Peconic
Civic Association for the ordinance.
IQrs . Elliott Meyer, Peconic, wanted to know the time of the Town
Board' s hearing.
Joseph J. Gleason, Southold, spore for the ordinance on behalf of
Paradise ShorT Association.
Joseph Poey, Southold, wanted the names of the papers in which the
TovJn Board would publish its notice of hearing.

dinance.
Iir. Lel Paz, Southold, wanted. his property zoned as business in-
dtead of residential.
The hearing adjourned at 10 P .M.
