We have never been objected on this before so it's news to us. As far as I know NFPA 855 does not make mention of this unless we are talking individual ESS units that exceed 20kWh. What version of the NFPA855 are they referencing, 2020?2023? Chapter 15 in NFPA 855 2023 edition covers Single Family residential applications. Also, minimum distance from the ground must be 18"- WHY. There is no minimum distance, I can place these units directly on the ground, what are they referring to. Max allowable height off grade is the only thing that has a specific limit on the installation guide since we will run into issues with complying with 404.8(A) At this point, I think it would be easier for the inspectors and Sean Beattie to have a conversation. Powerwall 3 Installation Manual 20 Nunemaker, Amanda From: Permitting - SUNation <permitting@sunation.com> Sent: Monday,July 14, 2025 2:38 PM To: Nunemaker,Amanda Cc: Sean Beattie Subject: Re: Rodd 900 Yennecott Drive Southold Attachments: Powerwall 3 - Excerpt.pdf DearAmanda, Here are comments from our lead engineer, Sean Beattie (cc'd here): The only clearance requirements are for vents on heaters and local/state codes. NYS RBC R327 only requires us to be clear of doors and windows. As good practice, SUNation does avoid air intakes, although that is not specifically spelled out in the current residential building code. I see no issue with the design here. If the Town would like some added comfort here and proof that we are doing our due diligence, would you like us to raise the Powerwall off the ground —24"? My thought here on this would be,the vapors from home heating oil are certainly heavier than air and may sink lower to the ground. The Powerwall 3's air intakes are located at the bottom of the units and ventilate upward to the exhausts on the top rear as shown below: STEP 1:PLAN THE INSTALLATION SITE Choose a Location that Meets Powerwall 3 Clearance Requirements Powerwall 3 requires adequate clearance for Installation, cabling, and airflow. The spacing on either side of units and between units is required to ensure there Is sufficient clearance for venting and thermal management features.Do not install anything Inside the required clearance above Powerwall 3,or anything that might fall and damage the unit.Do not mount Powerwall 3 horizontally or upside down. Figure 4.Powerwall 3 Air Intake and Exhaust Vents Air Exhaust Vents 00 0 ra av I 0 0 j Q V ' "\AirIntake Vents ' Airintake ^•_Vents CALL nON:)In addition to meeting all clearance requirements, ensure Powerwall 3 Is Installed on a flat surface that is clear of obstructions or protrusions that could damage Powerwall or Inhibit airflow. The air vents on the rear and lower front of the unit must remain free from obstructions and accumulation of debris(like foliage or dust). Being that this is an outdoor installation I don't see this scenario ever occurring though because: A) it's an outdoor vent- plenty of air movement B)the home heating oil tank and it's contents are Located in the basement 1 r t C)there isn't any realistic situation where there is such a concentration of home heating oil vapor that could become an ignition source. I have attached the install guide above. Please let me know if this information is sufficient.
