Dear Ms. Monson:
This letter is a follow up to your email received on August 11, 2025, along with several
photographs. The Board of Trustees reviewed your request to remove the tree with
orange fungus on your property within 100' of the wetlands. These trees were reviewed
and seen by Trustee Elizabeth Peeples on September 17, 2025.
The Board of Trustees determined that the tree may be removed at this time. No permit
will be required in order to perform this work.
Any other activity within 100' of the wetland boundary requires a permit from this office.
This is not a determination from any other agency.

Hi Thomas,
We are the homeowners of 600 Smith Drive South, Southold. Today we had Jonathan Shipman from
Shamrock Tree Company at our house to look at a tree in our backyard. We have a large orange
fungus growing on the tree roots and the tree is leaning towards the.house. He told us this species
of fungus grows on dying roots and the.tree will eventually die. He didn't know how long it would
take to die. He said with the tree leaning towards the house and the roots dying we would lose the
tree in a hurricane and it would hit the house. He suggested removing the tree because they are
predicting a bad hurricane season this year with above normal storms.
We are requesting permission from the Board of Trustees to remove the tree. I have attached 2
pictures per your instructions.
