1IELTIAG OF JANUARY 17, 1955.
A special joint meeting of the Southold Town Board and Southold
Town Trustees was held in the Millage Hall at Greenport, on Monday,
January 17, 1955. The meeting was called to order at 8 o 'clock
P.M. with the following present: Supervisor Klipp; Justices
Tuehill, Albertson .and Demarest; Town Attorney Terry; Town Trustees
Emmons Dean, John McNulty and Frank Dawson and Town Clerk Booth.
A group of baymen of the Town of Southold were present to discuss
the taking of byg escallops from the waters of Southold Town
that are in a depth of water where they are frequently exposed
to freezing .
On motion by Justice Demarest; seconded by Justice -Albertson:
WHEREAS, a representative group of baymen of the Town of Southold
have advised the Town Trustees that in certain Southold loin
waters large quantities of escallops known as "bug"' escallops , or
escallops without a clearly defined annual growth line, are in
a depth of water where they are frequently exposed to freezing ,
and have requested that permission be granted for taking such
escallops in the Town waters hereinafter described, and
WHEREAS , the Town Trustees of the Town of Southold have requested
that the Town Board take such action as it deems proper, and re-
quest the Conservation Department to permit the taking of such
escallops , and
WHEREAS , the Totem Board of the Town of Southold has given the
matter serious consideration a:dd deems it to be in the best
interests of the people of the Town of Southold that such permission
be granted,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT REGOLVED: that, due to the inninent danger
of loss of large quantities of escallops by freezing, the super-
visor be and he hereby is authorized and directed to request that
the: Conservation Department of the State of New York take immed-
iate steps pursuant to the provisions of Section 156 of the Con-
servation Law to permit the taking of such escallops in certain
Southold Town Waters known as (1) Gidds ,`Bay, (2) the flats off
Laughing Waters , and (3) the northeast side of Goose Bay up to
1 500 feet west of Goose Bay Bridge, in an amount not over five
bushels per person per day, .in any manner except power , on or
before .Aprml 1, 1955, in a depth of water not over 2 feet at
low tide , that all other tegulations pertaining to the manner and
time of taking escallops , except as requested to be modified herein,
remain in full force and effect, and that the Supervisor take what-
ever steps he deems necessary and proper to assure the granting
of such permission.
Vote of Town Board: .Ayes-Supervisor Klipp; Justices Tuthill,
Albertson, and Demarest.
Supervisor Klipp declared the foregoing resolution duly adopted;. .
