SOUTHOLD TOWN BOARD
SPECIAL MEETING
September 17, 1982
A special meeting of the Southold Town Board was held at
8 : 15 A.M. , Friday, September 17, 1982 at the Southold Town Hall ,
Main Road, . Southold, New York .
Present : Supervisor William R. Pell , III
Councilman John J. Nickles
Councilman Lawrence Murdock , Jr.
Councilman Francis J. Murphy
Councilman Joseph L. Townsend, Jr.
Justice Raymond W. Edwards , Jr.
Deputy Town Clerk Elizabeth A. Neville
Chief of Police Harold D. Winters
Town Attorney Robert W. Tasker
SUPERVISOR PELL I will now call this special meeting to order .
The purpose of this meeting is to receive a report from the police
committee on hiring a police officer for the Town of Southold from
the Suffolk County Civil Service list . We have the civil service
list . Beth Charters is number one on the list . Is the police
committee ready to make their recommendation?
1. On motion by Supervisor Pell , seconded by Councilman Nickles , it was
RESOLVED that the. Town Board of the Town of Southold hereby appoints
Beth D. Charters Police Officer for the Town' of Southold effective
September 17 , 1982 at a salary of $7, 500. 00 per annum.
Vote of the Town Board: Ayes : Justice Edwards , Councilman
Townsend, Councilman Murphy, Councilman Murdock, Councilman
Nickles , Supervisor Pell .
This resolution was declared duly ADOPTED.

2 . On motion by Supervisor Pell , seconded by Councilman Iti4urdock , it was
RESOLVED that Police Officer Beth D. Charters be placed on a leave of
absence from September 17, 1982 until September 30 , 1982 in order to
allow her time to separate from her present employment and to secure
uniforms .
Vote of the Town Board : Ayes : Justice Edwards , Councilman
Townsend, Councilman P:Iurphy, Councilman. Murdock, Councilman
Nickles , Supervisor Pell .
This resolution was declared duly ADOPTED.
TOWN ATTORNEY TASKER: I believe the original agreement was *to hire
her for the first six (6) months at a salary of $7,'500:00- wi-th a raise
to $12,000 for the second six (6 ) months.
COUNTCILIMAN NICKLES : Yes. That is correct .
SUPERVISOR PELL: Then , we must amend the first resolution.
3 . On motion by Supervisor Pell , seconded by Councilman Nickles , it was
RESOLVED that Resolution No. 1 be amended to include a raise in salary
from $7, 500 . 00 to $12 , 000. 00 after completion of six (6) months of
service.
Vote of the Town Board : Ayes : Justice Edwards , Councilman
Townsend, Councilman Murphy, Councilman Murdock, Councilman
Nickles , Supervisor Pell .
. This resolution was declared duly ADOPTED.
On motion by Justice Edwards , seconded by Councilman :Murphy, it was
RESOLVED that there being no further business to come before this
Town Board meeting adjournment be called at 8 :26 A.M.

Townsend , Councilman Murphy, Councilman Murdock, Councilman
Nickles , Supervisor Pell .
