The annual Fishers Island meeting of the .Southold Town Board was held
on Tuesday, Aug. 15,, 1961. .The meeting w4 ,•helda.in the auditorium of
the Fishers Island High School and was called to order by Supervisor
Lester M. Albertson at�.1.: 30 P.M: with the following present: Supervisor
Albertson; Councilmen. Demarest and Grathwohl; Justice Tuthill,., Clark
And Edwards; Supt. of Highway Price; _.Town Attorney Tasker and. Town Clerk
Richmond; officials of the State, County, Town and guests and residents
of Fishers Island:
Moved by Justice Edwards; seconded by Justice Tuthill:
RESOLVED: That the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting be
dispensed with..
Vote ' of Town Board: Ayes-Supervisor Albertson; Councilmen Demarest and
Grathwohl; Justices Tuthill, Clark and Edwards.
Supervisor Albertson inquired if there were any problems the Fishers
Isliand people would like to discuss. The question of boats and bathers ,
from out of Town and state using the beach leased by the Civic Assoc-
iation was brought to the attention of the Board. The Supervisor inform-
ed them that boats could be kept outside of the lifeline and a sign
"PRIVATE BEACH" could be put up.
The question of how soon or whether or not there ever would be a bridge
connecting Long Island and Connecticut and whether or not Fishers
Island would be used as a stelbping stone, was brought up for discussion.
Mr. Dennison informed them that the bridge could be directly across
,the sound. When asked how soon such a bridge might be built, Mr. Dennison
remarked, "Maybe in our lifetime" .
The question of deedging of West Harbor was. discussed. Mr. Albertson
informed them that the Federal Government had been contacted in regard
to this matter.
There was . a question as to whether Fishers Island Airport was included
in the County Project. Mr. Dennison informed them it was considered in
the' County Project.
The Highway Department was requested to paint more .yellow lines in the
center of the roads on Fishers Island as the roads have many curves.
Supervisor Albertson informed them. that many of the roads on Fishers
Island would be taken over by the Town by use.
A report .from the Civil Defense Commission stating that if Fallout
Shelters were built the shelters could not be assessed for taxes. .
Mrs. John Gada said there were gun implacements on the Island which .
could be made into Fallout Shelters.. Senator Barry said possibly Federal
Aid would be available for_, this purpose."`
